Best Thompson Center Encore Big Game Hunting Cartridges
6.5 PRC
The 6.5 PRC is a fairly new cartridge offering made by Hornady, that is surprisingly light weight. It has somewhat limited factory ammunition options available for it.
- Energy: A 6.5 PRC should produce around 2580 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle
- Recoil: On 7lb rifle – 22.5 lbs of energy to your shoulder
- Barrel Length Suggestion: We suggest a 22”-24” barrel
- Ammo Used: Hornady 143g ELD-X Precision Hunter Line
- Barrel Weight Used: 7 lbs
7mm Rem Mag
The 7mm Remington Magnum is one of our top hunting cartridges due to its energy vs weight ratio. It is a long action cartridge with a belted magnus case.
- Energy: A 7mm Rem Mag should produce around 3,100 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle
- Recoil: On 7lb rifle – 28.8 lbs of energy to your shoulder
- Barrel Length Suggestion: We suggest a 24″ barrel
- Ammo Used: Hornady 162g ELD-X Precision Hunter Line
- Barrel Weight Used: Just over 7 lbs
- Contour: Heavy factory contour is an .810” diameter all the way out.
- Suggested Contour: Our heavy factory contour is suggested because it has enough rigidity to be accurate but isn’t terribly heavy
3oo Winchester Magnum
The 300 Winchester Magnum has been around for awhile, and has lots of factory ammunition options, as well as a lot of military surplus ammunition available.
- Energy: A 3oo Win Mag should produce around 3,500 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle
- Recoil: On 7lb rifle – 35 lbs of energy to your shoulder (adding an optic will reduce the recoil)
- Barrel Length Suggestion: We suggest a 24”-26” barrel
- Ammo Used: Hornady 180g InterLock White Tail
