The 223 Wylde excels in the close to medium range varmint hunting. As well as small-medium size game within 1-200 yards. Make sure your 224 diameter projectile is legal to harvest game on.
.223 Wylde vs 5.56 Nato
.223 Wylde gives you the option of running 223 Remington and 5.56 Nato cartridges. This is a difference in throat. It will handle the pressures of the Remington and Nato without any issues. It works for your Contender/G2/Encore platforms, 50 grain – 75 grain.
The Wylde is essentially a hybrid between the 223 Remington and the 5.56 NATO. You’re gaining the accuracy of a 223 but we add extra throat so you can accept the 556 Nato.
It’s also compatible with the same cartridges most commonly found in AR-15’s so if you’ve been stocking up on that ammo you can use that on your TC Encore/Contender 223 Wylde barrels.

223 Wylde Factory Ammo Cost:
Cost of a factory ammo is rated as fairly low.
Cost to Reload 223 Wylde:
Reload cost of the 223 Wylde is very low. It uses a low powder charge and shoots lightweight and small projectiles which are typically inexpensive. Your powder charge range will go anywhere from 22-28 grain.
Barrel Life of 223 Wylde T/C Encore Barrel:
Barrel life is rated as good. It should last a long time.
Best Twist Rate of 223 Wylde
We offer a large amount of twist rates for the 223 Wylde.
- 1:12 slowest rate we’d suggest.
- 1:9 twist is great for 55-60 grain bullet.
- 1:8 up to 70 grains.
- 1:7 should stabilize the 75 grain projectile.
- Any heavier than that you can go down to a 1:6.5 twist rate. An 80 grain is ideal for long range.
Suggested Contours for .223 Wylde
If you’re doing target shooting a heavy factory contour is suggested. But if you’re taking it out in the woods hunting varmints then a tapered factory is suggested. For the Contender we would suggest going with a full bull contour, this gives you the ideal weight – rigidity ratio.
